Vintera pickup cover on the left, Nordstrand/CIJ Fender reissue cover on the right. Not much difference, but enough to spoil your day!
I'm planning to sell my Vintera pickups, so I had them out for inspection today. They had fun making these look like the old pickups, right down to the grey bobbins, purple wire and long, thin magnets.
I’m sure that Nordstrand can make them for the space that you have. Obviously if you already bought the set then it’s a moot point for you, but for anyone else who’s thinking of buying them, they are very good about making custom sizes to fit.
I imagine he would, yes. I guess that the Vinteras are close to the original '60s specs. The wider Nordstrands fit without having to widen the pickup route in the bass, however.
So I’m settled (for now) on the mods for this bass. Hipshot tuners, Aguilar pickups, a blend pot in place of the toggle switch, and Labella Low Tension Flats. I got a replacement D string from Labella and the buzz almost completely went away. I’m really happy with how this bass turned out!
Has anybody popped a JMJ neck on a vintera or PJ bass body without issues? Interested in messing with another pickup option in one but I love my JMJ neck and would secure another if they are plug and play.
Do you happen to have any diagrams for this mod? I'm interested in doing this also.

From an earlier post of mine (post 2533 in this thread has pictures with a mustang):
I ended up going with a Gator G-PG Pro-Go Ultimate Guitar Gig Bag (not a bass bag). It fits a mustang very nicely when you remove extra padding that is attached with velcro. And the bag has structure to it and is not flimsy. Someone else on this or another thread suggested it. But it is not cheap at $150+.
I just googled some, but I got in over my head on this one. There were a multitude of issues so I bit the bullet and gave it to my guy to fix everything. Sorry I can’t be of more help.
I’m using a Protec Contego that I already had. There’s obviously way too much room, but there’s a velcro strap to hold the neck in place and I just don’t throw it around. Eventually I’ll either get additional padding to fill the voids or get a snugger fitting bag.
Mine usually lives in a hardshell case, but I have gotten it to fit OK in a Fender gigbag intended for a Tele/Strat. It was the "Metro" bag and appears to be discontinued.

I’ve noticed that some notes feel like the whole neck/bass resonates along with the string. Is that a short scale thing? A flats thing? A mustang thing? Maybe because the body is so small and thin this happens? It’s a little alarming when it happens because I’m not used to it, but it doesn’t seem to effect the sound.
The first fret F on the E string does sound significantly softer and deader than the other notes on the same string but I think that’s more because of the infamous labella thumps E.

Does anyone have the new Squier Mustang and the PJ one? If so, do you know if it would be possible to swap the necks? After a lot of work with a foam sanding block I've got my PJ neck exactly how I want it. Rounded fret edges and fast satin back. But I'd love to have the vintage style and Mustang pickups. The CV is still a month or two away here in the UK so can't try it out yet. But I don't usually like gloss necks. If I knew I had the option to swap the necks I'd pre-order one now.
I have a dumb question that I've been wondering about...
Every Fender-branded Mustang Bass (or "short scale bass") case I have ever seen has a strap on the left brace to secure the neck:
I have never seen a similar strap in any other Fender bass or guitar case.
Also, the strap does not seem to be necessary, because the short-scale/Mustang cases are otherwise built just like all other Fender cases. The bass neck is not any more free to move around than any other bass or guitar in a similar case.
Does anyone happen to know the reason for the strap?
