Couldn't resist a bit of spam.....
Replacement string nut is here and pretty damn close to spec, just high all around. I've been sanding the bottom, and if I go too far, it's one of a pair and I'll take it to a luthier I recently discovered to do it right.
The shim was too small
that's what I get for trusting the description! Now I've got a nice .25⁰ blank for guitar in the drawer. But I also had a spare 1⁰ bass one so just grabbed that and started sanding and cutting new screw holes. Now the bridge is bottoming out instead of topping out haha, so it needs more sanding but is working as intended.
Hipshot confirmed new screws on the way! Free shipping and everything, and my agent sounded like he agrees they should have just come with the kit. They might be earning their way to me getting the expensive HB10 lollipop tuners direct.
Finally, the EMG GZR kit is in. The J pup is pretty thin alone, so the secret has been rolling just a little P pickup back to get beefy but jazz-ish sounds, and both dimed is a really nice big tone. Rolling back the J predictably makes the GZR pickup dominate. I really like it. (Though I had to carefully disassemble and reassemble a wire connector to get the wires thru a tiny hole for the J pickup, which took the smallest screwdriver I own and a lot of gratitude for getting LASIK 3 years ago)
So, sanding parts, replacing Kickass bridge screw, some obnoxiously irreverent control knobs, and finally the tuners upgrade, and this new mutant mod will be show-ready.

Quick question about the Mustang bridge and the string mute: does anyone know, which of the later mustang basses have a bridge where a string mute would fit?
I assume this would work with the JMJ model, but what about those CIJ, Vintera or Squier models?

It should fit all the models that have the big mustang bridge but i think the JMJ model is the only ine that have the predrilled screws.
Well, you guys just had a guitar player join your club. I just received my new American Performer Mustang Bass in the sunburst finish. I had read that it ships in the wrong sized gig bag but mine fits like a glove.
Hello everyone. I was thinking of buying my 4 year old a squier mustang. He currently bangs around on one of my squier p basses (matt freeman sig) . Since I've never played a SS and not to fond of going to a music store at the moment, my question is would this be an appropriate size for a young child? The squier mini p might be a good choice also. But if I can say this purchase is for him and I get to use it then I'd rather buy the mustang.
I think it would be too big, but that’s just my opinion. I’d go with an Ibanez Mikro or something along those lines. My 10 year old uses a mustang, but he has to sit on a stool for more than 2-3 songs. Here’s an indication of size on a 10 year old (a Vintera, but a mustang nonetheless). Edit: note that the latter half of the video gives a better idea.
Thanks. They do ok for their ages. My son started on a Mikro at 8 years old. We added EMG Geezer pickups and hipshot tuners. It would still be more than adequate for him now, but he likes the mustang.
Predrilled screws in the body? But the Vinteras etc do have the 4 holes in the bridge itself?

Yeah the classic mustang bass bridge have the 4 holes on top of the bridge where the mutes where connected to the bridge. As you can see in the photos the JMJ and Vintera comes pre screwed but the japan model do not.
