It has exactly the same P pickup as Fender used in the 50s Classic and the J pickup is the same on used in the Classic 60s Jazz. I couldn't fault the sound of the P pickup in mine but never found much use for the J pickup.

Confirmation I can sorta hear some detail in pickup response
I've had the option of getting an original '60 P pickup re-wound by an expert, but haven't felt the need to swap out the original on my 50s Classic.
I think that alone gives these PJs quite a lot of bang for the buck, though I swapped out for EMGs specifically because I do already have that P sound. Doesn't hurt that the EMG J pickup growls nicely, so I like having it mixed in.
Good info, thanks for sharing. I was fully prepared to swap the P pickup in mine (don't use the Jazz at all, really) but from our first practice playing it, I felt like it was punching above it's weight. Interesting to know which pickup they use in it.
I kind of had my doubts about this statement, so I went digging in the old service manuals. My apologies! You are absolutely correct! The Fender Precision 0056003000/0056003000 set was used in the pre-2008 American Series P basses, as well as the Classic 50's, Road Worn, and Highway One P basses. The 0058359000 Jazz Bridge pickup was used in the Classic 60s, 70s, Highway 1 and the MIM version of the Marcus Miller Jazz.
I actually have that Precision bass set, from another project, which I'm going to use in my Mustang build, totally unawares, at it were...I'm going to use a Hot Jazz in the bridge though. Everyone seems to find the standard one to be kinda meh!!

I found a much better, obvious way to install Hipshot Ultralight tuners on my Squier CV Mustang without fussing all about with corrective shimming. Simply communicate with the Hipshot company! (What a concept, right??)
The four HB6L Ultralights (USA model, 1/2") you want to install have 17mm bushings (those large 'ferrules' with the locknut tops), but your CV Mustang's tuner headstock holes are 18mm?
No problem Sparky... Just communicate with Hipshot and they'll send 18mm replacement bushings. These drop right in perfectly, no shimming, no fussing required, and of course the shafts of their USA Ultralight tuners screw as easily into them as any would expect!

Fo the P/Js, the HB-10s are direct replacements, and you can just leave the stock ferrules in the headstock. MUCH more accurate tuning (27-1). I'll bet that's why they're on the Vinteras.
Quite true; and that's been well established. But then Hipshot's HB-10's are not Ultralights and as such are a bit heavier than their ones that are... -So the HB-6 Ultralights are just in case you might want to eliminate some neck dive too?

I hear tell that the USA Hipshot 1/2" HB-10's (non-Ultralights) are drop ins using your existing ferrules. (-Or bushings...)
But if you want the USA Hipshot Ultralights, then if no one here can already tell you what the diameter of the tuner holes in the PJ Player Mustang are, you need (at the very least) to take one of the tuners out and measure the diameter of the headstock hole. If it's 18mm across I have already posted exactly which Hipshot tuners and bushings will fit w/o having to do any shimming.

If you order Hipshot Ultralights w/o this measuring (as I mistakenly did) it's strictly a hit-or-miss affair. If ordering without knowing this measurement you can then later fuss with multiple discussions about shimming (as I did), and/or you can email extensively with the Hipshot rep (as I did) and he might then send you different adaptive bushings. Also your luthier could fix any discrepancies later, as long as you're comfortable with not fully knowing how he had to maybe shim the tuners to fit.

@Tex Bass I have the exact same Mustang and I gigged with it last week (blues). I put some Labella low tension flats on it and it sounds so good to me, I can’t imagine swapping out the pickups. The slight neck dive hasn’t been an issue with a wide leather strap. It is my favorite P bass I have ever owned. My only issue is that I am not used to 19mm string spacing.
I just got the Nordstrand Acinonyx and It is the only 4 string I know of with 17mm string spacing. Just works better for me. For that reason I may let mine go, but I think this has been my favorite Fender. Definitely recommend them!!
What's the best source for a switch replacement on a PJ Mustang? I bought what was supposed to be a Switchcraft jack from Amazon and got ripped off.

SHOOOP!!! The larger 18mm bushings from Hipshot turned out not to work so good with my Squire CV60's Mustang. Their larger thickness would make the new small holes needed to drill for the HB6L tuners way too close to the large headstock holes for me to chance risking possible damage! Went back to the original 17mm bushings using just a very slight bit of copper tape for a little added filler. Installing the tuners then so they rest downward toward the body of the bass is working out. Got two in so far okay, nice and secure, will show photos after all 4 installed okay.

You might also consider replacing the switch with a blend knob. I did that on one of my PJ's and like it much better.

Ordered a Gator ProGo bag. Now that we're back to gigging in the near future, and I know that my Mustang will be my main instrument, I thought it'd be good to give it a little more protection.
Unfortunately, I was sent a Gator Transit GT-Electric instead, a lighter weight bag, with a good front pocket, and a plush red liner. It's also around 1.5" shorter than the ProGo, and I can confirm a Mustang PJ will not fit, even with all padding removed. Hopefully this info will help someone looking to buy a case one day.
