OK, it is as I thought - the pickup is magnetically similar to a p-bass pickup, one bobbin is north up, the other south up. (D/G bobbin = north, E/A = south.)

No, the question (post 4314) was about the magnetic orientation of the Nordstrand NM4 pickup, and not the stock pickup.

The NM4 is indeed as I have stated. It is also true of the stock pickups in the Squier VM Mustang bass.

Confirmed w/a compass in both cases.

I reviewed that and several related posts.

It looks like I misinterpreted when you said 'it' in post 4314, and which pickup you meant in post 4322.

We should put together a complete list of which Mustangs' stock and aftermarket pickups have which characteristics, regarding magnets' polarities, direction of windings' wraps, and external connection polarities, as there has been significant misunderstanding, confusion, and/or just not knowing sometimes, about them.

Regarding the Nordstrand NM4 pickup in particular :

NM4 Mustang Replacement

I was unaware of that pickup until now, and have just looked at the page.

It does not seem to mention anything regarding what you have learned about the magnet polarities/directions.

Also, it states that the NM4 was designed for the MIJ/CIJ reissues of the Mustang bass, which ironically is one of the models which might least need it, as those already have that design of pickup [internally like a P], and which apparently are slightly larger externally than most other Mustang split pickups.

As for the Squier VM Mustang bass having the better design of split pickup too, I did not know this, so thanks for researching and posting about it.

That said, it is further ironic that a low end Mustang would have the better design of split pickup, and the current most expensive model(s) would have the poorer design.

Go figure.

Hi, NBD today, so new it's still got the plastic coverings on and needs a set up.
First impressions are, it looks awesome, no sharp frets that I can feel and I hope the switch holds up , here's a pic.

Has anyone purchased a replacement pick guard for a Player Mustang through WD? The website is showing a PJ version for the Mustang, but it does not specify Player (MIM) version, so I am just confirming that it will fit. Is the Japanese version the only other PJ configuration besides MIM that is made, or are there others with possible differences in specs?

I have contacted them in the past in regards to fitting another instrument, and they only recommended sending the existing guard or doing a trace and sending it to them for 100% accuracy. (so I have not contacted them yet- figured I would ask you guys first!)

There are a lot of other options besides WD. I've bought 3 different pickguards for my player PJ from three different sources and they all fit just fine. I can send links if you'd like.

Interestingly the CIJ & the VM didn't have identical pickups, in spite of both of them being advertised as "Duncan Designed." The Duncan logo appeared on the covers of my VM, but not on the CIJ. The logo does not appear to be on all VMs, as I've seen some without. I'd be surprised if they're different pickups, but who knows?

The CIJ's original pickup was a bit anemic, which is why I replaced it w/the NM4. The VM kept the stock pickup, as it sounded fine as-is.

I do like your idea about compiling a list of specs for various mustangs over the years.

Have you or anyone else measured the newer Squier CV 60s model pickups? Are they P-like or both North like the other models?

Obviously from my avatar that's the exact same one that I have. I considered the tidepool but I really wanted to try a maple neck. I'll try to take some pics of the three guards tonight and post them. The black pickguards from DecoBoom are only $28 I believe and shipping was really quick too.

Nice, didn't even notice! Yeah, I would love to see photos if you can.

For my current Mustang, I went with the sunburst. Planning to hopefully mod the new one the same way: black hipshot Bridge and Ultralite tuners (if i have similar neck dive)
