One pic is bass laying on top of case. Another is a side view. Another is a shot of the bass in the case. The case does not open completely as the zipper doesn’t extend all the way across the bottom. I was told that this was the replacement for the Urban. It’s very thin and would only be good for scuff protection. Nat at all pleased with it.

I hated it all the way and did this. No more switch, stacked volume on top of tone, down where I can't bump it accidentally and pup blend knob above... not for everybody I'm sure, but I thrash around too much playing, kept bumping that pesky switch.

For similar money, it looks like Gator's ProGo is a better bag - although I haven't seen one up close yet... I did order one yesterday - with a 25% discount, it cost me around $110 from Musician's Friend... I'll post about it when it comes in:

I haven’t decided how to handle the electronics on mine yet. Hate the switch. I’m leaning toward doing a couple of stacked knobs (provided I can find high quality ones that are shallow enough to fit) for volume/tone ‘62 JB style and either disconnecting the switch or removing it altogether. Another option is putting a blend pot where the switch is and leaving the volume and tone where they are. Having a blend “up there” would be odd though. I just installed the Hipshot bridge I got for Christmas!

Consider me part of the club. Here is the bass I was teasing last week. A ‘66 Mustang belonging to Kevin Black of Margo Price’s band. Kevin handed over the keys last night after a killer show at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia. This bass has been all around the world many times over and will now reside in NJ. I just played it a few minutes ago having never had the opportunity to play a Mustang and I’m pretty blown away. I get it now!

What brand, gauge, and length strings are these. Been looking and reading posts but there are so many differing opinions.

I think I'm done tweaking my Mustang PJ. Just put an ivory pearl pickguard on which I feel gives it a bit of a vintage look. I got it second hand so previous owner already switched the pickups to Quarter Pounders. I never heard the original ones so don't know how big a change that is, but they balance well and sound good.

It came with a black Schaller bridge and tuners, with the original tuners missing, so I bought some Hipshot HB10s as a close match, and put the original bridge back on. Just didn't like the look of the black hardware. I put Chrome strings on as well.

Whoever was in charge of the frets had a bad day at the office, so I also took a foam sanding block and sanded the edge of the fretboard after seeing a Youtube video on how to do that. The fretboard edges are now really smooth, even, and lightly rolled, and after lightly sanding the back of the neck a bit I'm really happy with how it plays. Smooth and fast.

I now just have to convince myself to stop looking at Vintage Mustang basses, the new Performer, or the JMJ, as this does everything I want. Wish me luck with that. View attachment 3248402 View attachment 3248403 View attachment 3248404 View attachment 3248405

Yeah, it's a problem anytime the binding rests on your saddles. This is my only complaint on the MIM Mustang I bought a couple of months ago. Very hard to find flats that do not have this issue! I researched the heck out of the purchase but never considered the flats on the Relic version of this bass from Fender would not work. The Relic uses a string thru bridge. I have another bridge coming but suspect it won't do either. I may have to get out the drill at some point, bite the bullet, and perform a string thru surgery! I'm not looking forward to that but sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do!

Mine are the ECB81S short scale Chrome's. 45-100. They're the only flats I've tried and I'm curious about Jazz flats or Labellas, but not enough to buy and try them because these play and sound great to me. I play mostly 60s Garage and Psych, if that helps.

Here she is. I've had the JMJ mustang a few weeks now and it just keeps getting better. So far I've done a few things to her.

(1) La Bella Flats - Sounds great and good tension. Not loose or floppy at all.

(2) Tort pickguard. Just couldn't make myself like the white pearloid. I know lots of people love it - just wasn't for me. Rubbed down the new pickguard with 0000 steel wool before i put it on to get the shine off so it wouldn't look new and out of place. No relicing, just wanted to dull it a little so it didn't stand out so much.

(3) This is a big one ... Sanded off the nitro on the back of the neck, and refinished it with Tung Oil finish. I don't care for the look, but it plays so much better. For some reason my hand always sticks on nitro and it was really bugging me. Sanded off the nitro and put on 2 coats of tung oil finish. After a week, I sanded it with 5000 then 7000 sandpaper and it feels smooth. It looks like raw wood, but is sealed and feels smooth. Plays great.

Grats... she’s beautiful. I like the pearl guard, but the tort is really nice. I especially like what you’ve done with the neck. I too do not like the nitro on the neck. On the mustang I used 0000 steel wool and my plan was just to smooth it down and get rid of the tack. But, nothing happened until suddenly it went through to the wood, but only in small spots. It seems like the nitro was uneven and impossible to sand evenly. Once I started getting spots all the way through to the wood, I had no choice but to go all the way. I wasn't happy at all at first, but now its great. The tung oil finish feels great.

Npw that’s commitment! I guess with the pre-reliced finish, it’s probably not as intimidating as digging into a perfect shiny new finish. Last year I routed out the pickups on a MelodyMaker guitar whose finish is quite worn, something I’d never done before on another instrument. Still, even with a worn finish it’s a bit of a mental step, a full commitment to making the instrument your own (as opposed to valuing potential resale value more than maximizing present usability)

My Mustang P/J in Sonic Blue. Still stock, side from putting flats on it. I had a set of D'Addario Chromes already in my string stash, but I'm not exactly in love with the sound. I have TI flats on my Ibanez jazz box, and I like them a lot, but...not sure I want to spend $70 on strings. Still, a nice addition to my Rumblekat for different bass sounds.

I was finally able to play a Mustang PJ at Guitar Center today. It played really nice, I liked it. The neck was a tad thicker than my CIJ's, which I actually prefer, and light weight too.

I wouldn't mind finding a used one and dropping some DiMarzio P+Js in it.
