Hi, just did a quick demo of my Pawn Shop Mustang showing the sound of the humbucker with tone fully closed, at 50%, and fully open.

Just got my JMJ back from Chicago Fret Works. Had them route and place a '51 Fralin split close to the bridge position and move the input jack. I didn't think that bass could sound any better, but I was wrong.
Really nice.
IMO, even though the Mustangs are almost perfect, you can always give them a little boost with a bit of thought and tinkering.
As far as I can tell from doing some basic research, the Mustang basses only featured the contoured bodies from '69 to "81, after which they were discontinued for awhile. The '66 - 68' models, all the late 90's/2000's RI's, Pawn Shop series, newer PJ's and American Performer series all have slab bodies. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I have a couple slab bodied and a few contoured bodied Mustangs, and MUCH prefer the contoured bodies.
My first short scale bass was a Squire Vintage Modifed Jaguar, which also has the contoured body. I guess I'm spoiled. It's a helluva lot easier to hug the instrument into your body for that close up and personal connection while you're playing.

Agree. My ‘76 has the contours, and is much easier to position. However, the neck is a baseball bat compared to the current US and MIM models, and the older MIJs. Much like a Short scale older Precision. Also much heavier.
Huh... I have a '76 sunburst and hadn't noticed a lot of difference between that neck (1-1/2" nut) and the one on my Pawn Shop (1-9/16" nut). Although, the PS neck profile seems to have a slight taper from the side of the fingerboard to the back of the neck, which, I guess would make it a soft "C" shape. Also have a '67 (1-5/8"), which definitely feels chunkier and the Squire Jaguar (1-7/16" nut) with an almost soft "V" taper! Seems like the difference in neck weight would be barely noticeable. Are you getting neck dive?
The necks on my basses are only off by 1/16" and it's hard to tell much difference. I will say that the SJ is noticeably more comfortable to play, without my fingers feeling crowded or cramped. I have a '78 natural coming tomorrow and I'm assuming the neck is about the same as the '76. They both have the heavier ash bodies that I prefer.
BTW, I forgot to note that the Squire VM Mustang basses also sport slab bodies.

I like that! Suits the Mustang's aesthetics way better than the J pu they use in the Player series.
Picked this up a few days ago! So far I am very impressed. It’s the first short scale bass I’ve ever owned. First I’ve ever even played actually. Found a decently priced one for sale locally and did some research. Reviews are generally positive. The seller was a guitarist looking to do some home recording and picked this up for the scale length. Apparently he didn’t play it much. Feels great, setup is good on it. Fender flats aren’t as terrible as some people say, in my opinion anyway. The pickup under the E was dropped way down. Assuming this guy had a boomy E string like many others have mentioned.
Anyway, I’m very glad I jumped on this one. Plays good, feels good.
Now to find a good hard case...

Grats! Mine is sweet and I think everyone else here will say the same. I bought the Fender Mustang Hardshell case. It’s nice.

Yeah, the Fender Mustang hardshell case came with my CIJ reissue, and I'm glad - it's a really nice case for these basses...
