Hummm. I love chromes on my Standard P bass. A match made in heaven. Since I have a Special Edition Deluxe PJ strung with rounds, I’ve been thinking of trying chromes on the PJ Mustang. You’re guys posts have pushed me to go ahead and give it a try. It’s time for a string change on the ‘Stang anyway.

Very vintage-y with the La Bellas on. 60s vibe. With a pick it nails that Carol Kaye sound.

daddario exl 170m are what I use on my JMJ when I need rounds.

I have Chromes on my PJ and they sound great. Dunlop flats are another good choice, which I put on my American Performer.

I'm a bit down on Labellas at the moment. I had them on my string-through American Performer and the E string broke at the tuner when I over-tightened it by accident. It wasn't that far past E and now the set is a throw-away.

Sitting in the groove doesn't necessarily mean the witness points are good. The strings could still arch out of the groove causing a chorus-like tone. Pressing down on the strings in front of their saddle will set them if they aren't sufficiently set. It's easy to do and might help.

BTW, the witness points at the nut should also be set.

It could also be a defective string.

I bought a pj last year any suggestions on pickups that will yield a more bassier sound? A guitar player in group I play in complained that mustang was getting lost on the mix, sounding more like guitar than bass, particularly around mid fingerboard (D on G strong? I like the neck and size of the mustang, but other basses I have (66 jazz is most noteable ) don’t present this problem
