I put s Lace Sensor Man-O-War set on mine, and it's a world of difference in output and tone. With the stock setup, I would replace the P with a Geezer or Fralin, something like that, and solo it. I wouldn't have bothered replacing the J on mine, but I had the set already on hand. Also, you need a P that has the poles showing to match the J.

I myself replace the pickups with a Seymour Duncan PJ set that I got for a steal. On my PJ the stock neck pickups were if'y at best and bridge pickup was almost non-existent. Those 1/4 pounds were a game changer. Being a former precision player I got most of the sound I was used to. Not all of it but it was a substantial change for the better. That, a Hipshot high mass bridge, switchcraft hd short stem 3 way switch, new pickguard, and a custom pickguard shield and it is great! I will have to get back to you on the number of the SD PJ set. I only used the Lace set because I had it already. Since I don't use the J on the P/J, I would have just replaced the P with something with more output than a stock MIM Fender pup. The 1/4 Pounders mentioned above are excellent. If you go with just the P replacement, you can probably find a good one in the classified here for $50 or so. DiMarzio is also a good choice for not too much money, or just about any Seymour Duncan pickup.

The SD 1/4 pound set I installed is the SPB-3/SJB-3b 1/4 pound PJ Bass Set. Hope this helps.

Ok here is a start as it won't be seen on the avatar.
This is a custom pickguard shield made by my brother, using the Lost Wax method with the original stock pickguard.
I never in my widest dreams ever thought that the original "Mint" guard would be of any beneficial use! But "saddly" it was destroyed in the making of the shield. Iam waiting for the new PG to arrive to install this. I am also going to shield the pickup cavitiy as well and then slap on a set of D'Adarrio chrome flat wounds.
More to come keep an eye out.

Another option is Nordstrand... I am currently installing a set of the NPJ Blade pickups in my Mexico P/J... I will be able to let you know how they sound next week when I get it all finished...Doing away with the switch and wiring it up like a 62 Jazz :thumbsup:

I was expecting questions about this. So, I bought a CME Special Edition. Black with tortoise shell PKGD and maple fingerboard. A beauty. I'd been waiting for this combo for years. Well, black PKGD but the tortoise shell was a bonus. Then I found a Torino red body and decided to switch out for my wife who loves red. I'm really pleased with the look. I'll have to pick up another CME in Black 'cause I really loved it. That's a limited run but this red number is one of a kind. For now anyway.

Very cool. I was thinking it was CME, but had forgot those had the maple board. Just checked out the black/tortoise special order versions again on Reverb. I am out of control in love with maple FB Mustangs!! I have a '76 sunburst and '78 black with the maple. Both have black pickguards. I've also seen two 70's natural finish ash body versions with the maple, on Reverb and eBay, but didn't have enough funds at the time to get either one. I recently "settled" on a '78 natural ash body/black PG with the rosewood. Funny, it's actually one of my most favorite of the bunch (I have a few others). Has a perfectly straight neck, plays like butter, sounds like a dream and is in beautiful condition. Love your red/tort/maple combo!

Love the sunburst. I have a Fender humbucker that came with the Pawn Shop olympic white model I recently purchased. It came with a Curtis Novak BiSonic installed. Was thinking about putting the Fender PUP in a Musicmaster build, only remove the cover to expose the coils for a more raunchy look. The cover is currently soldered onto the coil base so it will take a little bit of work to remove it and see if it would even look right.
