If I'm correct, the Precision bass from '51 was called that because it had frets. It was a direct progression from upright (and facilitated better intonation of notes), which was used in Jazz trios a lot.

Name a few. Monk Montgomery comes to mind, and maybe Jim Hughart. I'd like to hear more. I don't see them often in straight ahead trio jazz. Fusion yes, probably some soft stuff, but not much outside of that.

Dave Brubeck's son Chris plays a fretless Ric. Jazz, but also blues and more progressive stuff. One of the few guys I've seen play 16th note runs while singing and not looking down.

I have seen him. Just didn't even put 2 & 2 together that he was Dave's son. It's amazing(to me) to watch him.
