Fender P/J style Jazz done (pics inside)

For the past month or so I've been collecting parts from various eBay scores to put together my own customized bass. For the electronics, I ended up gutting my old Squier P/J bass for its Duncan quarter pounder pickups:

I've always preferred Jazz bodies over Precision bodies, so I fetched a MIM Jazz body from eBay. After assembling the parts, I took all the pieces to the local luthier and had him put everything together. The final result:

Parts used:
MIM Std. Jazz Bass body
MIM Artist Mark Hoppus pickguard (modified to allow Jazz control plate)
MIM Std. Precision Bass neck
SPB-3/SJB-3 Basslines Quarter Pounder pickups
Badass II Bridge
Barrel chrome knobs

It fits the P/J bass role down pat. It's definitely a keeper.

No replies because i didnt see it yesterday lol

thats sick , like thats exactly what i want in a bass, PJ but on jazz body with a P neck. Also quarter pounds are my favorite pick ups and it also has P knobs.:bassist:

If you ever sell it PM me.

Very nice!!

I am building a PJ from Warmoth parts with a Jazz Neck and Precision body along with some Nordstrand noiseless pickups and Hipshot Bridge/Tuners.

The reason I decided to go in this direction, is that I already have a Fender MIA Jazz bass, and I figured that the Precision body with a Jazz neck would be a nice edition. I love the Precision body, because as a guitar player, I always loved the Strat, which is the same body style.

That said, I love the sexy curves of the Jazz style body just as much.

Enjoy your new bass!

Dave

ouch, no replies :(

Agree with the others, very nice.
I recently got a Lakland DJ5 and dont like the tone so ive ordered a Nordy NP5 to go in the neck position. My DJ5 is also black and im really looking forward to getting it all sorted.

Can you tell me how different the bass now sounds, does it sound pretty close to the P with just the front pup on?

Again, good work and enjoy.

Thanks for the kind comments, guys :hyper:

With the P pickup soloed, it sounds exactly as grindy/thumpy as a P-Bass should sound. I have heard that the magnetic pull from the J pickup alters the sound a bit, even with it rolled down, but I can't tell too much of a difference.

I wasn't sure if I wanted to put on Jazz knobs, but I think I'll be keeping the P knobs

I think I'll be keeping this one, but you know how fidgety GAS is ;)

nice
you should check out some Aerodyne Jazzes if you want another

I did think about the Aerodyne Jazz Bass at first, but I wanted more of a traditional look - the Strat jack, lack of pickguard and thinner body width turned me off from it.

Thanks.
I also read about the extra pup can affect it but as long as i get the thump back ill be happy.

It's not that the magnetic pull is gonna effect the tone, is that the P pickup is 1/2 an inch closer to the neck on this bass. If you slap a P pickup on a jazz body in its regular position, it lies over the edge of the pickguard. Usually when you have a jazz bass with P/J pickups the P is 1/2 an inch closer to the neck and the J is in the 60's location. Typically on P/J's with a P body the P pickup is in the regular position and the J is 1/2 an inch closer to the bridge in the 70's location.

Yeah, the position of the P pup is whats worrying me but as long as i can get a P thump ill be happy.
How about if the pup is reversed, like Sandberg (and a few others) do? Wouldnt that bring the E and A in to the right position but leave the D and E in the wrong place? That might be an option i might look in to.

Having several P/Js in P bodies and a J that was converted to a P/J, I can't say they sound that different from each other when you're using both pickups. At least not for the ones with the same pickups in them. The J that was converted has the bridge pickup in the 70s position which is the same as the others, so just the P is forward a little. It might be a bit different, but I don't think that you'll be unhappy with the sound at all, it's pretty similar.
