WOW!!! Nice!Late to this thread... My early '59:
All this is true - thought there were a few one off exceptions. The great "one that got away" bass for me was one of the Buck Owens special orders: an original 1964 silver sparkle Jazz Bass with matching headstock and maple cap neck (same construction as the rosewood board necks - no skunk stripe on the back/walnut plug on the headstock). I also saw an early '60s tele with maple cap (no skunk stripe) neck.
My understanding was that there were two of the prototypes with the Jazzmaster type pickups. We had one of them at Real Guitars in San Francisco in the early '90s (I worked there at the time). Very skinny/thin neck.
Further, I understand there were 5 or 6 sales sample Jazz Basses made in '59. I've seen/played one of these in the flesh (belongs to Jeff Ament).
Another odd-ball Jazz I've seen was from Norm Harris' collection (I was there when the shop was closed and he pulled out some of his personal stash) was a very early one he got from Freddie Tavares which had an ebony fingerboard (not dark Brazilian rosewood). He also had Jazzmaster from Tavares with black anodized aluminum pg and a one-piece maple neck as johnk describes on the '59 Jazz he saw.

1964 Jazz Bass, JUN64 neck stamp.
The body had been painted white over the original sunburst finish. Years later, the former owner removed the white paint using 10000 grain sanding paper. There's some white residue left in the deeper dents, which is nice because it shows the history of the instrument.

awesome story! i recently just bought an 83 62 reissue jazz that someone brushed varnish on the entire back of the bass to seal the finish wear. i wetsanded it all off and it was a total pain in the arse!Did I post this one already?

Oooooh yeah, my '64 LPB Precision, 100% original down to the very last screw. That one is really special to me.Of course the J is beautiful.......but there is something about a blue P Bass

Bending the pre-CBS definition just a little bit, this one has a neck stamp from March 65. All original, Lake Placid Blue with matching headstock.
I've got a red CIJ reissue which mirrors those specs;
I'm desperately thinking about heading back to the Kaien Island so I can play it through my rig; I figure the Vox Amplug isn't doing it justice.
Wow! So many great basses here. This looks like the sibling to Energy's LPB P-bass.
