Fender pre-CBS Club: pics mandatory!

Did I post this one already?

1964 Jazz Bass, JUN64 neck stamp.

The body had been painted white over the original sunburst finish. Years later, the former owner removed the white paint using 10000 grain sanding paper. There's some white residue left in the deeper dents, which is nice because it shows the history of the instrument.

Man he did a good job of sanding that Jazz down.

My first pre-CBS Fender purchase this weekend: 1960 Precision. Apparently all original parts except the pots are 1974.
Somebody really went nuts with the paint a long time ago, but thankfully they didn't remove the pickups. The body clearly reads "8/60". 56xxx serial number.
I think it looks so awesome. Sounds great. 10.0k ohms. Only 8.2 lbs.

I have been enjoying all the pictures and information in this thread.

I could be joining your ranks very shortly.

This is the pickup cavity of the bass that would be gaining me admittance

. My question is whether this is real of a counterfeit?

I've never seen the date written in green before but only in pencil.
Every thing else seems right.

Your thoughts?

Difficult to make that call based on one photo! Do you have more?

That was really the only red flag I saw.
Body shape is correct. no date in the neck end but shape decal and board are right.
Hardware is right.
Body is a decent refinish and neck may or may not have very minimal overspray.
The harness and pickup are defiantly not original.

The green date which looks like it may have been done with a felt tip marker is really the only thing that makes me question the authenticity of the year.

As you probably know, a lot of '59s didn't have the neck date (but some did). Never seen the body date in green but have vague memory of a '61 years ago in red so anything is possible. Maybe they just used a colored pencil/grease pencil that day (I doubt felt tips were around yet but could be wrong).

Yeah, from what I have gathered there were no hard and fast rules back then.

Even the experts don't agree about everything.
The folks at gruhn told me that by 1960 bodies weren't dated and I know that is incorrect.
Once a bass is dissembled a lot is up for grabs.

I think magic markers were in existence at the time but I don't think that paper mate came out with the Flair felt tip pen until 1970 or so.

Non original electronics, no neck date and a serial number that that can be bought on eBay any day of the year does raise question.
Thanks for your help.

Fullerton bump on the lower horn? Post pic?

Agree and agree.

Truth is vintage pots can usually be found on eBay any day of the year as well. There's a level of risk to any vintage purchase. Good luck! It would be nice to see more photos.

This Pre-CBS thread is addicting. Such amazing basses in here with so much history and knowledgeable owners. I’m glad to finally own one and learning so much about them is very enjoyable.
I wanted to share an updated photo since I got my 1960 Precision a few weeks ago. I removed the original neck, dated “12/60” (packed away safely, just in case), and replaced it with a Jazz neck because that’s my playing preference. I got the exact specs I wanted in a ’61 reissue Jazz neck. It’s already road worn, and I “aged” a HipShot D Tuner. I also added a pair of “aged” knobs since the bass didn’t have any.
This bass is now very gig ready.
