My '65 Jazz Bass, bought it in '69 when I was 16 years old for $200.00. All original except for the pickguard, replaced in '72, and knobs, it had Fender amp knobs on it when I bought it. 'L' series, same specs as a '64 even with clay dots!
Love those bursts with the bright yellow. Did it come with all that wear, or is that all you?

It definitely looks quite "pre-CBS". I guess the Jazz Bass started to look different later in '66 when they introduced fretboard binding and block inlays...That was from it being pretty much my only bass for 15 years ! It is defiantly a player, it has the most output of any passive bass I've ever owned, the only ones that come close were my active basses. Whoever wound the pick ups that day must have had some extra wire on the spool or something they are really hot and no loss of output in all those years. The only reason I replaced the pickguard was I used to play at the end of the neck and anchored my thumb on the edge of it. One day I thought it would be a good idea to cut the upper horn of the pickguard off to give me more room for my thumb. The band I was playing in at the time thought it looked so bad that they bought a new pickguard for it for my birthday in '72. It had the bridge cover on it when I bought it but the pick up cover was long gone and over the years the bridge cover disappeared as I never used it anyway. Pretty light at just over 9 lbs. From my understanding clay dot necks were somewhat rare in '65, just whatever was laying around after the takeover by CBS.

JV vs. '64? Well, the neck of the '64 is a bit flatter (and I like that) and it sounded somewhat "wider" than the JV. The JV was a bit deeper in sound. The biggest difference however was in the feel: I really, really like the nitro finished neck on the '64, reminds me of my old Fenders (which are not eligible to be present in this thread). The gloss poly neck on the JV is a totally different thing to play. Very good, but different.
But that '58...that was out of this world. What a brilliant instrument. Every note you play is just...there. Every lick you play sounds amazing, and even just some open strings blow you away. I don't wanna brag, but my Eich rig I played it through made it sound even better. What a combination.
