Apologies if I am not explaining this well. I will try again.

The pup came back and I immediately noticed that the poles were recently ground down and no longer corroded. So, I called them to ask whether or not they had understood that I wanted the original bobbin sent back rewound. They told me essentially, "oops, we missed that. We have a pile of old bobbins. When one comes in the door for a rewind we just grab one of the bobbins out of the used pile of stripped bobbins, rewind it and send it out. Stripping the bobbin that was sent in is a separate operation. We do that separately and add that bobbin to the pile."

I actually asked if they could locate my bobbin and return it to me; and they said no they did not keep track of the used bobbins. This in spite of my having explained that the pup was from an original vintage instrument and I specifically wanted that bobbin back.

I expressed my displeasure at their method of operation and let it go. I didn't see any options.

Honestly, it is somewhat frustrating to even revisit the whole episode. Prior to sending the bobbin to Fralin, I had spent literally about 20 hours under a microscope finding the broken winding and first getting a reasonable solder joint on it, and then when the pup failed again not being able to get a good joint on the broken winding. I had some skin in that bobbin beyond the vintage value of the thing.

I'll say this - determining authenticity of original vs refin can be a slippery slope. For example, I am dead sure my neck finish is original; but the back of the neck is NOT worn off; and it is definitely not a respray. Anyhow, assessing what has and has not been refin'ed is getting harder; and at some point may lose some of its relevance. My < 2c.

Refin or not if you like it and it plays/sounds great that's all that matters.

Still debating but leaning going with MJT who I have worked on with other projects. To replicate a soft worn nitro sunburst like these examples below.

The goal of the resto is to return it to a condition the original sunburst finish would have looked like if the original owner had not covered it in house paint! Grrrr. The nitro finish will be thin so as I play it everyday it will wear very quickly and look more and more natural. Just going to have the resto give me a head start.

It will look something like this...

Just a nice light natural worn look - not huge missing paint chips/ scratched up look that so many purposed relics have. I worked with MJT on project like this before and they are amazing at what they do.

If not this route then oil it up seal the neck and have the lacquer aged to look something like this... Still deciding but I think it will be sunburst.

( this is 66 but you get the idea)

My favorite is aged yellowed only white but if I do a refin I think it should go back to original aged finish.

Thoughts anyone? I was going to do a poll in a separate thread open to the masses but I don't think I could handle the fights it would start. Lol!

My avatar is my 61 Stack-knob. It was refinned the 70's standard walnut stain when I got it. The lacquer had broken down in the Florida humidity to the point that it was gummy to the touch as soon as you sweated at all. I had my friend Ben Chafin(current owner/designer for Electra guitars) refinnish it in original sunburst nitro. After 20 years since the refin it still sounds and plays fantastic., and looks great as the nitro has aged.

the thread about the guy buying his basses back from a pawnshop made me finally take out my axes and take pictures/record serial numbers.

heres my two pre cbs basses. 62 slab board jazz and a 64 L series precision with a jazz neck. picked up the 62 jazz from a guy in canada back in 2000 or so from the gbase classifieds. bought the 64 from the second owner. an older guy in burbank. i probably overpaid for the p, but considering i cant play 1.75" p necks and the cost of piecing together something like this from parts on ebay, it was pretty fair. including the refins on both (dont worry they were both refin'd all read when i got them!) ive got about 5500 tied up in the pair. wouldnt trade them for any boutique or custom shop version out there.
