If it has never been played is it actually any good? It might look like the mutts nuts, but it also may sound and play like a dog (lots of canine similies here).

If it's not played then it is not a musical instrument but an ornament. On the "just another one" note I don't think that classical musicians regard any Stradivari as just another instrument and they've been played the hell out of and have all sorts of repairs and mods.

Hi Guys...

I've read all the post... Any of them deserves a single answer...but... but... but.... There are too much answers to write... I won't be able to give a comment on each post... Othewise I would spend my whole Sunday in front of my PC... My wife is a very nice woman but I don't think she would stand it... Some of the comments made me laugh and some others put tears on my eyes... I've already presented this bass in some french, and Argentine forums... And the reactions were almost the same... I've got to say that my English isn't good enogh to understand some of your comments... I'll have to brush up on my knowledge of idioms... I'll give some general answers to the main points:
1) I won't play this bass... It would be a crime... I am only the guard of the animal for a while.... Who wants to be the next ?
I had some cash and I thougt this would be a good investment on the long run... I've joined the useful with the pleasant... I think it was better rather than putting my money in shares to the stock exchange of Wall Street...
2) I dont think the bass has ever been polished.
3) You'd be able to see somme the natural cracks on the neck... Only provoked by the time which passes by... I take these cracks as a proof of authenticity... 44 years have left signs... And tha's normal !
4) This bass shows a Transition Logo, typical of the period from 1964 to late sixties.-
5) Yes.. this instrument is an ornament for the moment...
An Stradivari violin costs know circa 7 millions dollars... There are no many musicians that can afford one of the hunderds "Strads" still alive... On the other hand... You can still afford you a piece of rock & roll history for the price of an used car !!!!

BTW, where do you think the custom shop went years ago when they needed to copy old instruments? They borrowed examples like this.

It was a bit of a wreck when I bought it in 1979... some would say I've wrecked it even more!
I recently broke the original tort guard by carelessly pulling some cables from my gig bag... the pain!
I play it whenever I get the chance.

It IS a musical instrument.
Nonetheless, It is well worth taking very good care of in deed.

If it was mine... I would try to find the parts of that era, in order to get that bass as similar at it used to be during the sixties... It's a a Jaco Bass.... Sure... in terms of value it's not the same as if it had all its original parts... I suppose it has been refinished also ! Anyway... at leat yo can play with a piece of history... I can't say the same !!! but I have other babes to confort me !!!
And these... I may play them as much as I want...

Sure "Gigged" should be the proper term to say... Sorry about that... I play that babe every sunday after the church... So yes... I confess... This bass HAS been played !!!!
Tarzan could say a lot of things and made a lot of movies speaking with his "primary English".:D:D:D
I presume that your level of tolerance with "No English Mother Tongue People" is very low... :crying: But... Comming from me...
I think that's not to bad for someone who speaks 3 other languages as I do !!!! If you count the bit of German I speak... You may say 4 more languages....:hiding:

The display case is a piece of futniture... I've bougth it in the Geneva's Flee Market I found it in really bad condition. I had it restaured by three different artisans ! It's made in "Cerissier wood" ( cherry tree).
It's a 100 years old Gun display... I'm happy you like it !!!

Very nice shots of your Oly J...thanks.

Is that the original bridge? I'd think it would have the single groove saddles and the long G string intonation screw rather than the threaded saddles. The one in the photo looks like a '62 RI bridge.
