Fender precision bass or fender jazz bass?

Indie=P-Bass
Jazz=Either OR... I have been playing alot of Precision lately with my new band, and finding it actually sounds great in the mix.

P-Bass beats everything all the time. You will probably want the P-bass for the kind of growly tone you can get with a pick, the right pickups, and the right strings.
I never thought P basses were for me until I got my AmStd P5 last year. They fill out the mix beautifully and sound so full. A lot of other basses just sound so thin to me now.
both are excellent basses. i think that no matter what people say you have to try them both out yourself and see what feels right to you. personally i think if you are asking because this is going to be your main bass i would go with some sort of PJ setup. while i think P basses are great for rock and indie, the jazz bass is the better trade for any other genre, to me. i used to play a P bass, but sold it for a jazz because i loved the feel of the neck so much more. You can get both to sound great, but only one will feel perfect in your hands. best of luck.
bands like broken social scene and death cab have a very good indie bass tone, i always thought it was more of a p tone that they both had, but they can get very growly sometimes (like a jazz would) maybe get a pj?

Go somewhere and play a Jazz, Precision, and Jaguar.
They'll all work great for you. It's a matter of taste and comfort.

The necks are usually different, which is the deciding factor really. You should play and decide for sure.

As to your options, the J bass is built for speed, and in my opinion, is a bit more versatile. Their is only one way to get that P bass tone, though, and that is with a P. Just my opinion.
Isn't 'Indie' anti-mainstream, anti-establishment music?
If I were doing Indie, I'd get an anti-mega-corporate guitar, and find something obscure/unique. You can't get any more 'conformist' than Fender.

I just like the Jazz too much. Trujillo plays metal with a Jazz, so it can go hard if needed. Besides, I HATE neck dive.
I was surprised to see more so far people recommending the P bass over the Jazz for J azz style music!
I own both myself and I always come home to the Precision. It is the "stratovarius' of basses!
