Was there an era when "A" width necks were fairly common on specific Fender Precision models?

    During the 70's maybe?

Based on anecdotal evidence I think that's right. If one ever gets mentioned or shown around here it is most likely a '70s Precision.

I have an untouched 73' in CAR with an A neck (same as J bass).
It seemed so unusual to have an A neck on a custom color.
Then I saw it was made on Cinco de Maya
    I'm guessing after lunch break...

Here's where it gets odd; my 73' J neck is very similar to the above

My 74' J bass has a chunky neck but still 1 1/2" wide at the nut

'78 P-Bass-2.JPG I have one; and yeah, it's a '78. Back then, several neck options were available, as well as other things. From what I understand, these basses were always sort of semi-custom - if you wanted something different from the one in the store - pretty much from the beginning. I don't know exactly when that ended, but it was sometime after mine was made...;)
