In order to look period correct, I am sure they were added. The Highway 1's don't have the mutes. Neither do the '62 AV's for that matter. After seeing your Highway 1 I am thinking of buying one myself...

Fender Road Worn Jazz bodies are different

In order to look period correct, I am sure they were added. The Highway 1's don't have the mutes. Neither do the '62 AV's for that matter. After seeing your Highway 1 I am thinking of buying one myself...
you think they were just added to look the part? you may very well be right, but I'm looking at the countersinking and quality of those 4 holes as compared to the rest of the relic job, and i don't think that's the case. those look factory for something.
I have a HWY 1 P bass, and just purchased a HWY 1 Jazz (both 2006 with the upgrades). I would recommend it if you are considering it.
EDIT - OP, I'm not trying to rip on your bass, i'm just wondering about both topics you have brought up here. I'm all for you making an instrument yours, just let us know how you did it if you're gonna bring it up. While I'm not a huge fan of unnecessary relic-ing, I do love the HWY-1 bodies.

Did you just take out a belt sander and sand random places?
I see wear in places that wouldn't normally be worn, and then area around the pickups is completely clean, showing no signs of pickwear or playing damage.
Why do I see lacquer runs on the exposed wood on the lower horn? If the finish had been worn away down to bare wood, there wouldn't be any lacquer on it.
I see holes for the string mutes below the bridge pickup, but then where are the holes from the pickup covers?
I don't want to start a flame war or anything, but I'm sorry, this bass just looks terrible to me.

The AV ships with a mute kit, but Fender leaves it up to the new owner to drill the holes using a template.

Reviving this thread from the dead, but I just bought a sunburst road worn jazz bass body from the Stratosphere and I can see what the OP is talking about. My RW body has the markings of a 70's classic jazz bass, but done in nitro. Here's a couple of pics comparing it to my '91 '62 MIJ reissue.
In addition, there are markings in the pickup cavity as well as the control cavity that denote it was supposed to be a 70's jazz bass.
