Fender Rumble 40 speaker mod tube length?

Been reading the old threads from Astrosonic on speaker upgrades and the required port tube mod. Sounds like I need to mod the tubes to 2 5/8” length for the eminence basslite s2010 to have ideal cab tuning. What I can’t determine from those no longer active threads is where do I measure the 2 5/8” from? Is that the back of the speaker mounting board, thus total port length is 2 5/8” plus board thickness, or is it measured from the front of the board yielding a total port length of only 2 5/8”?

Port length is the total length from open air to open air. Whether that's the only change you'd need to make to optimise the enclosure for a different speaker is doubtful. To my ears internal damping makes a more audible difference to tone than port tuning.

In the original posts, internal damping is recommended as well. I followed the original instructions, (yes, measured from the front of the opening), and it really makes a huge difference!

So would tubes like this work? These are 2" outer diameter and should snuggly slide into the existing 2" cab holes/ports and all I need to do is trim them to length and silicone the front flange to the outside of the port. This would make the diameter of the ports slightly smaller and make for a clean install... any issues with this approach? Seems easier than removing the existing ports and flush mounting new ones or mounting them inside the port hole by the methods mentioned in the original posts.

I'm not a cabinet design expert, so I'm going to say "probably". However, be very careful with Silicone around electronics because they may outgas Acetic Acid when they cure, which could be harmful to the cab and electronics. I've seen "sensor safe" sealant/adhesive in auto parts stores, but I'm not even sure if that is 100% "safe" to use on speaker cabinets.

Good luck!

In all the posts Ive read, the method is to take 2" inside diameter tubes, slot one side so that it fits inside of the speaker board 2" diameter holes, meaning it tapers to a lot less than 2" anyway, I think this would be a lot less loss in diameter of the port hole, no?
