Yup. I saw George Benson at Gillys on N Main for $2.50 and a 1 drink min. Saw Chet Baker there too, same price. That little hole-in the wall had some monsters gig through there. Saw a few things at Haras. I was Dayton Gem hocky fan but i do rember seeing Chicago and the Stones there.
Spent many evenings at Gilly's. They remodeled it in the 90's and it was a great place to see live music. Saw BB King, Buddy Guy, Koko Taylor, Robert Cray, Lonnie Mack, Anson Funderburgh, Ronnie Earl there, to name a few. Unfortunately, I missed Stevie Ray and Bobby Blue Bland when they came there. They closed last year after some SOB robbed 80 yr old Jerry Gillotti after hours and put him in the hospital. Sadly, I'm thinking that the days of getting to see these types of shows in this town are all but over.
Man that is real sad to hear. Wow, ? I would not have thought that Jilly's could handle the size of some of the groups you are talking about. To acts we use to drive down to the living room in Cincinnati where we could see guys like Wes Montgomery. Where did you buy your instruments at hollers in Kettering or the Dayton Institute of music?
Not sure where Gilly's was when you used to go, but it was downtown, next to the Greyhound station when I went. Something makes me think it moved from somewhere else. I would say that it could hold 300-400 people, maybe more. I mostly bought used out of the Tradin' Post, but Hauer Music always had good stuff. There was a store in Belmont that I loved the name of...Drumville Guitarland. I bought my first acoustic there. A Hondo II, I believe. My first nice guitar was an Ovation that I bought from Moeller Music at the Dayton Mall. Still have it and the receipt, somewhere.
When I went to Gilly's it was on N. Main st. Just across the bridge on the right as you traveled north. I cant imagine that place seating more that 60 - 70 people. I think it was just before you got to Sutmillers. I always got my stuff from the Dayton Institute of Music I think of E. Fourth Street. It was small and looked like an old Pawn Shop. But it had a fancy name!
Yep, they moved. New place was much bigger and nicer. The service always sucked, but I was there for the music and it didn't matter. I worked right across the street from Sutmiller's for 10 years selling cars at Walker Olds. A real wake up call for a suburban boy from Kettering working on N Main St. I didn't know people lived like that. Meanwhile back at the ranch... what Rumble do you have? I've got a 500C with a 210 cab.
Bought a 65 Vett from Dick Rue right up the street. I have a v3 100, v3 500 head with a 210 cab and right now waiting for delivery on a 410 cab. I think I have all may basses (pun) covered.
I wish I had been that smart. I shoulda got a 410 and 210 instead of two 410s.
Kinda dumb luck on that. Someone commented that I will have 3 options, one with just the 410, another with Just the 210 and last just hookem together and get ordered out of the house. I'll have to go live in my kennel building. sigh..I guess I could wall paper it and get satellite.
Well my 410 just arrived.
