Yes, big fan of ELO / Jeff Lynne. IMO, outstanding producer, arranger, songwriter and all-around musician. Eldorado is a perennial favorite.
For better or worse, Jeff Lynne was simply one of The Architects of the Sound of 1970's Radio. I don't think there's any shame in that at all. While we might look back on that era and find a lot of things cheesy or aspects of the more commercial/pop music that haven't aged well, it was different times and, cheese or not, much of that music was well-drawn and at least (unlike so much of today's auto-pop, synthetic, derivative teenybopper stuff) had an evident human element and dynamics.
Along with Jeff Lynne, I think of Elton John, Lindsay Buckingham and Paul McCartney as big leaders of the 70s radio smash pop sound. Obviously I am leaving others out.
