That's not to say we always see eye-to-eye. I've argued against some of his solutions to problems. For example, he was shocked I went off omeprazole cold turkey and asked "Why?" I gave my reasons and he acknowledged them and I'm still off any and all proton pump inhibitors. That was not easy to do. It was severe stomach acid and reflux for 3 months until things leveled out. I had to reset my digestive system and had nothing but water and apples for a week. I had to sleep sitting up or I could have aspirated acid and gone out Jimi Hendrix-style. If you've ever gotten stomach acid down your windpipe or into your lungs, you have felt some serious pain!
I cold turkeyed omneperazole as well some years back. Had a couple of episodes where I could only lay down on the floor in fetal position. Those proton pump inhibitors are BAD. I really feel for people who have to be on those things. I was pit on those speculatively due to some wierd still undiagnosed thing I had going on.
My experience in the high tech world is that really only a small percent of them are actually really good at what they do. Medicine isn't really that much much different except more people go into medicine for the money and social status than they do for technology. To me that means that likely that mediocrity, incompetence and general disinterest is what you'll find as the norm in medicine. I'm generalizing way too much and the rate of competence goes up dramatically with specialists like surgeons, cancer treatment specialists, etc.
A good positive story...I know of a missionry who had a severe heart attack in romania and had to have sugery there. They popped him open, did stints and bypass and not long aftee he was on his way again. Big bonus was that the whole procedure ended up being only thousands of dollars instead of the financial mess here.
