Fender Rumble compression

How effective is the compressor on the Rumble 500c when using the Vintage tone shape? I've read on another TB thread that due to the tube emulation effect of the Vintage setting there is a "built in" compression. I'm a set and forget comp user and have a Diamond Bass Com,p (18v), which I like a lot. I might need to offload the diamond pedal to fund purchase of an acoustic guitar (totally separate to my bass rig). When I can, I'll come back to an outboard pedal. Meanwhile, how close will the comp in the Rumble get me? Exact same question and reason applies to the OD. I'm currently using a SansAmp BDDI v.1. I also like this a lot. What/how much will I lose if I let both or either pedal go? Cheers.

I think that desired responses in a compressor vary from bassist to bassist -- it seems to me that it would be important for you to talk about your ideal compressor response characteristics.

One thing to keep in mind, even taking the vintage button out of the equation, is the built in DeltaComp limiter. Dynamic compression, responding to your input signal strength

Well, Tom, the manual's spec sheet defines the Vintage shape filter as "Dynamic compression (-9dB max) with low pass (-6dB/oct) @ 400Hz", if that helps. And Big Al's link to the "Rumble Talk" in The Club thread about the ever-present, and very interactive, Delta-Comp limiter describes that pretty well. And, you didn't ask but, it's possible that an external HPF near the same setting as the built-in second order high pass filter could over-filter the tone significantly!

But, as with all things musical, "beauty is in the ear of the beholder". Standalone is exactly right about compression tastes varying by bassist. One musician's bliss is another's bane. The R500c's built-in Overdrive is great for me, and many others, who like to blend just a bit into some songs, or a lot into other songs. But, to others, it works best only as a "mute switch" by turning the Drive & Level both to zero! I, and others, need no pedals at all with our Rumbles, while others use several. Therefore, you simply must test it with your own ears, and tastes, to answer your questions. ​

@Standalone , I am not into slapping and just like a small amount of comp. You're right, I should have mentioned this. I think the thing I like most about the Diamond is what it does to my tone, but that's not really about the compression. It's also a great EQ with the tilt and I usually start there when adjusting to different rooms.
@CallMeAl , thanks for clarifying re the DeltaComp, that's really good to know. My main compression need is to keep things consistent - volume wise - when I dig in. I'll look into the DeltaComp a bit more today but I am guessing it acts more like a limiter than a comp, as in it reduces spikes in volume but probably does not boost (?)
