Fender select series basses

Has anyone tried one of the fender select jazz basses? I;m looking to replace my mexican jazz and when I was looking at americans I stumbled on the select series jazz basses. I am quite curious about them but have no place to try one. They seem nice and all but they are quite expensive. Are you just paying for the fancy flamed top and the fact that it is "select" series or are they actually substantially better than the american jazz's and jazz deluxe's. Thanks for any input guys!

I own one of the P-Basses, and it's excellent. Have played a couple different passive Jazz Select basses, and I also really like them. In addition to the cosmetics, which are beautiful, they also have great-feeling necks and superb sound. I'm not sure what is different about the "select pickups," but they really sound nice.
Also, you can find them used for $1,500-$1,600 from time to time in the classifieds here or online from stores like Bass NW. A word of warning about buying a used one sight unseen: the finish is somewhat fragile and seems easy to ding up.

I can tell you that I just bought a new Precision model of the Select series, never owned from a local music store. However its serial number indicates it was made in 2012 so these may have been sitting in a Fender warehouse for a while. The owner of the store said the same thing that was mentioned above, that the series is being discontinued. He gave me one heck of a deal on a superb bass and you may be able to get similar savings right now.
