Fender Serial number ???

A guy I know wants to sell me a strat. He is the second owner, and he say's it's american. The "made in" is scratched off (big red flag), but the serial number is E947819. From fender's website, this could be a Japanese model from 84-87, or a USA from 89-90. Does anyone know how I can figure out where this guitar was made so I don't get hosed? Thanks for any help.

You do realize this is a bass forum, right? :smug:

Seriously, it could be either, as you say. Try taking the neck off and seeing if there are any numbers in the neck pocket. That's usually a good way to tell a Fender's age. Also, see if the pots are dated.
