On my 08 MIA P I just realized that the serial code starts with Z7, does this mean that the neck was actually produced in 2007 or does fender regularly print serial codes in this fashion?

Fender Serial #'s

From the Fender site: "Z"-prefix serial numbers denoting the new millennium appeared on U.S.-made instruments in 2000. Z0 denotes 2000; Z1 denotes 2001, etc....As always, there is typically some number prefix overlap and carryover from year to year.

Its like the model year on a car. You can't expect them to start pumping out all the 08 models on jan 1 can you? Production probably started on the 08's in mid-late 07 so what this means is that you got an early "08" bass. Typically it wouldn't really be much of an issue but the upgraded components on the 08 shows a clear demarcation as to when the model year changed, so essentially its an 08 made in 07.
It probably was made late in '07, likely December, So Fender markets it as an '08. Doesn't seem like a big deal to me. It's not unusual for this to happen.
I asked this very same question in regards to my '08' MIA Jazz V that has a Z7 serial #. It's like a new car the '09' models come out before it's '09'.
I asked a guy with Fender's Customer Service about this. I asked if some of the "new" American Standards were actually built in '07 because they have the "Z7...." S/N's.
He said no, that the new American Standards were all built in '08. He said that each year, they get a certain "block" of S/N's to use, and don't want to "waste" any of the numbers. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but that's what he said. What makes more sense is what some of the previous posters suggested, ie., that the necks were actually made in '07.
