Fender Standard P vs American Special P

Glad to see this thread spent more time devolving into a ludicrous pissing contest between a couple of blowhards rather than actually helping the original poster...

But yeah, OP, from what I can tell and from what I've played while switching back and forth is that the American Special has a thinner neck back to front than it's MIM and MIA Standard compatriots... that being said, no two necks ever feel alike to me... so really just get your hands on as many basses as possible. Happy hunting!

Thanks for that. I have limited access in my town to different models, so I'd be taking a risk buying a special online.

I had an extended try out with my rig of one of the Am Special P's and I have to say it was probably the nicest sounding P I have ever played. Very light too. I preferred this bass to a USA std P.
Without a fret dress, the action was not able to be got too low on this particular bass, and that would be my only criticism.

I think Fender's trick (which is not exclusive to them) it to bolt on some nicer parts to the MIA products to try and justify the higher cost of labor. Figure there might be $50 worth of parts to try an justify the $500 of extra cost, but to some it's worth it.

I have two MIA Fenders and I bought them because the felt, played, and sounded great. Had a cheaper bass felt as good, I'd have bought it. In fact, I'd love to lay my hands on a Yamaha BB425. I hear they are excellent, but have never found one I could play.
