Fender Standard Precision vs. YAMAHA BB424

Hey,

After 4 years of bass playing, i decided to get a new bass.

I have the Yamaha bb424, and have been looking at the Fender Standard Precision bass 2009 (Invalid Link Removed)

Is it worth upgrading? Is the Fender Standard precision bass any good? Any other tips/recomendations/ nfo i should know?

Last week I was in the same dilema as you. After trying both ones, p-bass and bb 424, opted for the yami.
Don't ask me why!! To my ears, it just sounded better....with more personality!!
Anyway the yami makes a cool pbass sound :)

It is just up to you, go to a store and try them all!! they are both great basses to me!

They looked very semilar to the BB1024 offer in Canada and USA. And, we have it here in Montreal in some music store. They're great for the price. They're around 900$ to 1000$ canadian dollard. I tried the 4 and 5 strings. Both feel great. But, the 2024X is an AWESOME killer bass!

I realise I'm a bit late getting to this thread but came across it via a search engine so thought others might too...

I went out shopping for new bass about 6 months ago and had my heart set on a Fender P bass (my hero growing up, Steve Harris, always plays a P bass so I had posters of them on my bedroom wall for years!). As it happens the store also had a Yamaha 424 discounted by £100 so i thought I may as well try it while I was there.

I spent the next 30 minutes in a glass booth scratching my head... I just couldn't understand how the Yamaha was so much better than the Fender. I even asked the guy if I could try another P bass to make sure it wasn't just a problem with that model - it wasn't...

I accept that things like action are about personal preference and I'm sure the P bass would have suited me better if I had it setup but for me the Fender was just inferior. When I asked the 'experts' in the store why the Fender was so much more expensive all they could offer was that the build quality meant it would last for ever, but they ALL agreed that the Yamaha was the better instrument. Weird.

Anyway, I have been playing my 424 constantly since I got it and love it. I occassionally call into guitar shops and play around on other stuff but nothing has beat it yet.

My advice is to not get hung up on the Fender logo and go for quality. In this case for me that meant Yamaha.

Sometimes it's better to think twice :-) But I don't regret picking up my BB424 yesterday. It's very 80s, reminds me of when I started out, and played a red metallic brass hardware Aria Pro II I bought around 1983. I used my TC Electronics BG500. Now this was something else! Very very clean, very very LOUD bass sound. I can see why people compare the BB424 to Fender´s PB, but they are very different I think. I have a very good MIM PB 50s, that I upgraded with a BadassII bridge, SD vintage pups, and D'Addario EXP reds. It's an ordinary upgrade config but I like it a lot. The Yamaha does not have vol probs or dead spots, and has a lot of everything good. It's very versatile, and the fretboard it's very consistent in tone and vol. I can't really say anything bad about it, but I think each instrument should be assessed on its own. I wouldn't for anything in the world change my PB for my BB or vice versa. They're different (but sure good together) I think it's a matter of nostalgia to me, and to others, it may be another matter.
