fender strap shoestring?

So, silly question, but what is the 'shoestring' that came with the strap for and how do I use it??

That's a novelty left over from the days when people would tie their acoustic guitars and banjos to a strap with the shoelace, instead of the strap pin and slotted strap end system we use mostly now.
