Fender Ultra Precision - Which colour should I get! (Poll)

Which Colour?

Of those options, I say aged natural. I like pearl pickguards, but I'm not a fan of Tequila Sunrise bursts, so if you took the PG from the Plasma Burst and threw it on just about any other of these except the white one (and/or if you put a black pearl on the white one) I'd be sold.

The Sire P7s down around my pricepoint have much the same problem; the alder ones all have tortoiseshell guards which just ain't my thing, and the ash ones have a vintage white pearloid guard, which looks great on burst and natural but clashes with the trans white finish. The trans white would be super-sexy with almost any guard except the two options they offer, and there aren't many custom makers who will poke that many holes in a P-style pickguard. C'est la basse.

Cosmetic:

1. Jack plate is completely not flush with the contour of the lower body it sits along.

2. There if a finish ding/dent on the front of the body.

Functional:

There is a buzz when playing the open A string, BEHIND the nut. This will go away if I lightly touch the string on or behind the but. My guess is but is mis slotted or improperly set on the board.

Tbh the combination of all these things have left me pretty disappointed. Had it been only the cosmetic, I could maybe live with it, but as a set of problems I don’t think I deserve to pay the same price I could have paid for another one having been luckier to not encounter any of these problems.

I will contact the dealer and I am hoping for an exchange for the same bass (because it did sound amazing) after having been thoroughly checked by someone in the ship for all of the above issues and anything else which could pose a future problem (decent snug fit of neck into pocket for example)

Got to say the jack plate thing is definitely how it’s designed.

I didn’t change the string, but I did loosen it all the way and retighten. Also inspected the string for anything off. Nothing.

A friend of mine had a similar issue, had to take it to a luthier and after the nut was significantly and visually noticeably altered, it never fully went away.

It looks really strange to me but I'm no expert. Would still be tempted to change the string to be sure there isn't any loose metal in the part of the tuner you put the end of the string in but you're probably right about the nut. Very disappointing.

Don't know Guitar Guitar. Got mine form PMT. Superb service but actually I took it off the shelf. I'd be surprised if they don't rectify the problem really well (which is why I'm surprised it got to you that way in the first place).

Just checked the site. They still have them in the white.

I still haven’t managed to speak to support. I emailed them last Monday and no response yet. Apparently they are working on skeleton staff and have also shut off phone lines for support team. Can only contact via email. Painful

Things are really slow here. Been to a Guitar Guitar in Camden but their store isn't stocking any Utras. If I drive past next week I'll pop in and have a word for you. Hang in there. You still haven't said what it feels and sounds like.

Tbh I only played it for about 10 minutes after I realised it had these issues as I didn’t want to let myself fall in anymore love with it as I knew I was sending it back. But the neck felt great as I had been expecting from what I’d read and the sound was top notch. All the more reason to make me want one in good condition haha.

I know we’re a couple of years down the line with this thread now, but did you get a replacement, or the issues resolved? I’m really curious to know what the final outcome was for you.

I’m literally eying up an Ultra as I type.. and I have to admit that I like the look of the Arctic white one.

If the problem is string buzzing at the nut, then the cause is a nut slot which is too wide for the string. It is not so much a defect as it is a mis-sizing. Ideally, nut slots are carefully cut to accommodate a particular string diameter. A nut slot cut to accommodate a .110 E string is not going to perform well with a .090 string. And vice versa. Buzzing can sometimes be fixed by just loosening the string, and then reinstalling it. Another trick is to cut a "V" into the bottom of the nut slot to better cradle the string, but this is also going to lower the string. If the slot is already cut as low as it can go, then cutting a "V" at the bottom of the slot will make that open string buzz against the first fret and then the entire nut will really just need to be replaced.

And… then there were three!

It seems, following covid, there’s less choice in most things! Some of it related to material and workforce availability, and, some of it, possibly, an excuse to limit production costs, by offering less choice. The scarcity of some things, IMHO, will still generate sales, because there is now more of a general acceptance across many parts of the globe… or is it flat??? Possibly, B flat :laugh: It’s definitely Arctic White with a maple fb.
