Fender vs Custom

OK, I have been a HUGE fan of custom basses for many years now. I have sought out the snappiest and tightest most modern tone I could find, played only 5s and 7s, dreaming of custom wood choices, pickups, and specs kept me up all night!!!!!

Recently I heard Travis Carlton play a Sadowsky live and I loved the tone, but my three kids kept me from immediately buying one due to funding issues . So, I went to the local GC and privately owned music store and played a bunch of Fenders.

I felt like I had come home after wandering for years!!!!!!!!

The tone and FEEL of a Fender 4 string MIA jazz blew my mind!!!!!!! I must have one!!!!

How could I have gotten caught up in my custom bass frenzy and ignored the most prolific bass maker for so long? I am still keeping my Bee Bass, it is a wonderful instrument and I love it a lot but for most of my gigs it is too modern and punchy of a sound.

I have come home..........

I have this theory that people who start on Fenders end up back on Fenders eventually. And if they haven't yet, they will. Maybe they'll buy a Sad or a Lull or an AC instead of an actual Fender, but they all come back to it.

I have wondered once before to Foderas and they are fine axes, but nothing feels like home like my 1962 Fender Jazz slabboard!

My '78 P is always the bass I go back to no matter what else I own or play. It'll be interesting to see how Rob Allen's new P-bass copy will do in my collection, but I think it'll get a nice rotation.

Mmmmmm... Yes, I bought a 69 Fender Precision in 69 and sold it go back to school in 86. Have since owned a G&L L2000, two Kinal's, a Sadowsky... And guess what I just bought? A re-issue 62 Fender Jazz made in Corona California in 97. It's a beauty. Love the neck, love the sunburst, the tortoise pickguard, the skinny bridge, and love the TONE. After all these years, back to square one. Well almost.
