Double Bass Festival withdrawls

Not haveing any festivals this year is a bummer....only time get oportunity to jam randomly and streach the chops. Here is a pic of my rig to haul Thumper around the grounds looking for random camper jams.

I too miss going to festivals and jamming with others. I was a die hard for over ten years and was getting kind of burnt out on it. Luckily, we had an uptick in gigs late this summer and into October.

I will say that next year, hopefully the festivals will be in full swing and I will have a renewed and greater appreciation for campsite jams at festivals.

We attended a good size festival in southern California in August. Great fun, lots of great jamming, but it might have been too early in the run of this pandemic... A number of bands -- mostly from out of state -- had to cancel due to members having Covid19; a few folks even had to self-quarantine in their RVs while they were there. Sadly, after returning from the festival we found out that one of the bands which cancelled had their band leader and his wife pass away.

Since our band was all there enjoying the festival, we were honored to be asked to play instead of one of the bands that had to cancel. All of the jamming, performing, and everything else that we did at the festival was outside, and we've been vax'ed, so we felt pretty safe there and we've had no sickness afterward. But it was on everyone's mind and you could feel a sense of concern sort of clouding the experience.

There are a few more festivals on schedule in SoCal over the next few months. We'll be skipping our favorites this year and early next year -- the indoor festivals -- out of concern about getting sick. We're not too happy about that. As long as the weather is ok, we'll try to attend the outdoor festivals.

It's tough not having festivals to attend, but I have to say that it's far worse to have a festival and have people seriously sick there, or people getting seriously sick there or after attending. Bluegrass is as much about the community as it is about the music, and it's really sad to lose friends.

I've been out of the loop for a year or so since I sold by DB in a fit of panic during lockdown.
I picked up a new DB recently, getting ready for some festivals next year (knock on wood).
Considering going to Great 48 in Bakersfield.
