They both sound great (the player has a lot to do with that)....and although they are different, they both fit the job very well ( i prefer the Cutlass but would be happy with either)

I like grindy - I say the Cutlass. Of course, it could be the strings....

Grindy is fine in context, to be sure. For the examples shown, my taste runs a little more to the smoother Serek. I agree with the string thought, the right set will make a YUGE difference.

I like the tone in this video a lot. And I'm also listening through DT-770s so we're likely hearing something very similar.

What I meant by that other comment on the bass being mixed too high is that even though I didn't like those tones much I could have possibly liked them more if the mix had been more 'real world'. On this video I didn't think it sounded great solo at the very end but it was perfect, for this song, in the mix.

In the end, I think if Courtney Barnett asked me to be her bassist I'd get my hands on a Hofner with flats. It's a trio with a girl voice and jangly guitar. You don't need brightness or tons of mids to cut through that. It's more interesting to contrast that.

Oh that's interesting suggestion, I'm trying to get CB's bassist on the thread, curious about his opinion.

Annnnd there's my GAS again for a Lincoln as a modern replacement for the Grabber..

What's interesting to me is that depending on pickup location, the Lincoln can be a Grabber (with the pickups bunched to the center, like mine) or a Ripper (with the pickups spread out). I love the way Jake pays tribute to those basses with a tip of the cap and a wink rather than a direct copy.

Yea, I really love his take on the body shape. My ideal Serek would do a Grabber/G3 depending on pick up settings, but not sure if that would be attainable without 4 pick ups...

A P sound is always a won for me...
So I can't be objective !
But you could have made the Caprice sound a bit like the record (both pickups and tonality down).
