Your instincts are correct. The Serek does indeed sound great, but anything remotely post-punkish pop, like this, with jangly guitar and the snare on every beat, is tailor made for a p bass, and as far as I'm concerned, the more in-your-face the better, which is why I voted Cutlass.

I'm still not convinced by that Guild DS on the neck on mine, the P90 is definetly cool and could be good enough, what's your pickup config on yours?

YES! She's great! I saw her a couple of time in Japan (2015~2016? then kids were born..then Covid...) and a couple of her live (KEXP session) are favorite of mine that I regularly come back to

Indeed, I did try to EQ slightly but you're right LPF could have yield good result, I'm not sure if there is one built in Garageband (I keep the whole process very simple)

Serek's are cool, I long for another one, a 5 short scale of some sort but now with the USD getting expensive and inflation they are mostly out of range

I get close with a Caprice and a Lincoln!

Does your Lincoln have flats on it? My Caprice has rounds (DR True Blues) and I just put flats on my Lincoln (EB Cobalts). Wouldn't be a fair comparison if I did it but the EB flats are pretty bright for a flat.

I have NO idea what are the strings on the Lincoln, round for sure, I think those are the stock one so probably the brightness is already gone.

The Cutlass has some 9 months old Dunlop Nickel Wound Super Bright..oh...that would explain that...

Both sound great but I preferred the Cutlass. Agreed with others that the Serek didn't fit the mix as well. I think the ideal sound for that tune would have been almost a like in between the sound of those 2 basses, which surely could be achieved with a bit of eq and compression. I thought the Serek was just a bit too boomy whereas the Cutlass could have used a little bit more of that boominess.

I didn't like either one much. They're both too high in the mix for me considering it's not an especially interesting bassline to begin with. I had a preference for the Serek though as the Cutlass sounds nasal and in my opinion doesn't fit the song at all. I'm not familiar with the original and the youtube link you provided doesn't work for me.

There are high pass filters and low pass filters in the "Channel EQ" for every track. They look like this:

Where the grind of the Cutlass helps to cut the mix, on a good audio system the Serek can feel tighter with more body.

Between the recording in the DAW (with Beyerdynamic 770 that are fairly neutral), the first export to do the video edit, then a first local file compression and then the youtube treatment..the end result can also be slightly different from when I EQ/Mix in Garageband. One day I would really like a fast-track training with a sound engineer, I probably do it wrongly all the way

I like them both and I really like the way you presented them letting us really hear and compare their tones without trying to show off as so many bass demonstrators do. I think they could probably be EQ'd to sound pretty close to each other. I like the way the Serek sits in the mix with this particular song. Thank you for sharing.

I promise to do my best to actively hide the skills that I don't have :)

Irony aside I also think that the repetitive, simple bassline help to focus on the Tone quality

Ah yes the bass is mixed high on this one, well, if you do a bass cover you want to hear the bass right?

You can check this other cover I did with the Serek where I try to be more in line of a balance mix



and thank you SO MUCH for the Garageband tip, will look at it tonight
