After months of going through a variety of cabs and amps, I'm finally found the sound I've been looking for...I just had to go back to using SWR to get it.
I started out an SWR user about 10 years ago. I used to use the old SWR Bass 750 and a Super Redhead and a pair of SWR 4x10's that I used in various combinations for different sized gigs (before that I just used whatever was around)...about 5 years after that I switched to Mesa before moving to guitar.
About 5 months ago I joined a second band as their bassist and wasn't getting what I wanted from the Mesa rig anymore.
I went through Hartke (hated it), GK (liked it, but not quite what I was looking for), Ampeg (liked it a little more but still not quite right) before I got a good deal on a used SWR Big Bertha 2x15 (I got it in great shape for $350). After playing that cab, I immediately remembered why I liked the SWR sound so much all those years ago.
So I ditched everything but the Big Bertha and picked up a SWR Goliath Jr. III 2x10 and picked up a pair of SWR Bass 750x that I bi-amp (one into the 2x10 for my mids and highs and one into the 2x15 for my low mids and lows).
I can't believe how great it sounds. I've heard a few complaints over the hears about SWR being not quite as good when they got bought out by Fender (which was part of the reason I switched to Mesa when I first heard the news years ago), but honestly, I can't hear a difference in the sound quality and other than the lack of metal jacks on the inputs, I didn't notice a change in the build quality either inside or out. We'll see I suppose.
In any case, I'm totally stoked with my sound now.
I run a new American Standard P-Bass with Bartolini pickups and a HipShot D-Tuner into an EBS Multi comp set up for light compression and a pair of Sans Amp Bass Driver DI's with all the knobs set at 12 o'clock (one for each head) into the front of my Bass 750x's.
