Since I started in March I’ve weened myself down to to 4 dots south of thumb position. I went to hobby lobby and purchased some nice contact paper and made these with a hole punch. They almost look inlaid.

Double Bass fingerboard dots and instrument changes...

Although I don’t advocate the use of dots in the lower positions, I see no problem with them in thumb position. I also have one at the fifth where D is on the G string because this bass is an Eb. If they help Edgar Meyer play in tune I’ll use them too.
I have just three: fifth stop C, octave G, and the C above that, all on the side of the fingerboard nearest me. I don't see how the markers placed on the G side of the fingerboard face can be visible when the instrument is being played.
My Chadwick came with dots installed. I mostly ignore them, except when I have to start on a prominent note (say, a non-root in close harmony) or make a big shift, in which case I’m using them as guideposts, not landing signals.
Which brings me to a relevant observation: While lots of us don’t have fingerboard dots, we DO have flamed patterns in our neck wood that help us recognize the geography. Even subconsciously.
