When I was introduced to the instrument in a long established shop here in Decatur, I was told when I asked about the difference between the beveled board and the regular arched one that the arched board was sometimes preferred for orchestra and the bevel for jazz, but there was no big difference. Again when a jazz player buddy of mine, also classically trained by a cellist and a teacher in his own right, traded his beveled ply bass for a nicer bass with an arch, he expressed a desire to have the board beveled "because he would probably never use it for orchestra and he liked the bevel better for jazz". These were just my earliest experiences based on what other players conveyed to me, nothing else. It was not an attempt to mislead anyone.
Also just because the bevel was developed to make arco easier doesn't mean that after the fact it would not be found by many to be beneficial, even preferred, for pizz. as well. Apparently, it must have been a more dramatic development for the cello, as the most "experienced" bassists posting here don't feel it has any significant advantages or disadvantages for the double bass.
