Fingerboard removal question

Regarding the bass in this thread.

I'm considering removing the fingerboard by steaming. Can this be done with the frets still on? would the fretwork remain aligned after the fingerboard was re-glued after replacing the truss rod? The current fretwork is pretty good (see the pics in the thread link).

You can remove the FB with the frets still in, but they will pop out as you remove it, or fall out after complete removal. Most likely you will need to replace the fingerboard also. I have seen a few saved and reattached, but usually not.

You have to be really good in order to save a fretboard. You have a cheap bass and no experience. The odds are against you.
