Fingers v.s Pick is it a crime?.....Resolved!!

Plus: I get physically tired playing only fingerstyle, especially 2-3 fast songs in a row. Perhaps I need to lighten my touch or something, but if I switch off to a pick on one or two of those songs (especially the 8th note drones...), problem solved. So, IMHO, using Pick AND Fingers is a practical way to increase endurance.
So perhaps that is why picks are kind of Viagra shaped?
And here's another thing (why am I posting on this thread?? just kill me now): as i was watching the very helpful and instructive video (nice hat!), I came to a realization. When you're got a pick in your hand, you are pretty much stuck with it for a whole song. When you do not have a pick in your hand, you can more readily switch between fingerstyle and slap. So you play fingerstyle in the verse, and then in slap the chorus, or just pop a couple of notes here and there, or whatever. The unaided hand just seems more flexible...

If I switch from pick to finger, I stick the pick into a narrow slot between the bridge pickup and the body.
Wow -- you guys with usernames beginning in "JA" are obviously far more nimble than I am. So then the entire "versus" thing just evaporates completely for you. Good for you!

I don't think it's a crime, and I can also play with my fingers.
The tone I like, the bass I play, the attack I like, the styles I enjoy playing....it's all pick. I hardly consider that limiting - I feel like there's a LOT of room to improve with my picking technique. Heck, I don't always play bass so when I do, I prefer to just enjoy myself.
I find it a far worse "crime" that so many people bury their heads in bass only, and never try to compose music with other instruments. I think it's far better to learn about the other instruments and everything that goes on in a song. I really feel that does a lot for your phrasing and creativity.
This seems more important to me than what you strike the strings with.
I think part of the problem is that sometimes people say one is better than the other. When i made the decision to play with or without a pick, i asked a buddy of mine who plays guitar and he said that only good bassists play without a pick. But then i knew that its not true at all as there are lots of amazing players that play with a pick. I choosee to play fingers however. When i was talking to my friend bassists about what they think, they said that finger players are better than picks.
Thats the misconception i think, that fingers think their better than picks. I also talked to my music teacher who is a bass player and he said that pick players can play faster than finger players. But again, i think people feel like one is better than the other when in reality it should be about which is more comfortable for the user to do without sacrificing their personal desires from their sound.

not really, just because he is a finger player don't matter. It is what he is saying. So for it to be legit it should be a bass player that uses neither a pick nor fingers?
.....hmmmmm a spoon! Now I'll bet that would create some interesting tones to say nothing of an ENTIRELY NEW controversy to beat relentlessly into the ground......pick vs. fingers vs. spoons!

i dont se the problem with using a pick over finger playing. some music requires the pick to make a brighter more powerful tone, i really dont understand why people hate it
Its amazing what a Non- plastic pick and some EQ can achieve. Picks dont have to sound bright and fingers are not the only way to a round "thumpy" tone.
The main problem with this video is that there does not appear to be any change in EQ between the finger and pick examples. (as well as many other things you can do to imitate finger style with a pick)
