Fingerstyle Metal Bassists

excellent keep them coming! I don't think this has been mentioned but i just watched the Mastodon dvd and troy sanders plays with his fingers. He also sings, err makes vocal noises, while playing.

Side note: anyone know of any excercises to help with playing bass and singing (singing being relative i know).

But the problem with all of this: Why does it matter? Myself, I'm a fingerstyle metal bassist, but I am totally cool with pickstyle players... I often prefer the way it sounds.

One thing I've noticed with metal bass playing, it's almost like being able to play fingerstyle gets you extra street cred, no matter if your technique/tone is junk or not. PERSONALLY, I think the idea thing, for any genre: Use both techniques, and know when to switch up.

True. I play both, depending on the song. But I think this thread was more to just mention them, and also it could be a great thread to come to if someone is thinking "hey, does he play pick or fingers?"

Personally, i started this thread because ive been looking at many genres of music and growing as a musician. But my primary love is metal. Some of these bands on the list i don't care for... but if someone was curious it can be used as a reference. As far as me ive actually learned about a couple new bands that i want to check out... coroner, anathama etc.

If you play with pick or pick/fingers, good for you. This thread wasn't meant to offend anyone. It's not a "finger supremacist" thread. Constructive comments please and I appreciate all the feed back ive gotten so far.

Yeah Necrophagist rules! Martin from Decapitated is also a great player, but his style is different. Decapitated has one guitar player only and basically the bass player is making up for that by exactly playing all guitar riffs. That's very difficult since their music is very fast and he keeps up with! The downpart to it is that there are no surprising bass lines in their music at all, as opposed to Necrophagist. Also, he plays 6 string but I think he uses only 4.

Phil Wilson from Gorerotted also rocks! Pure black metal bands with good fingerstyle bass players are scarce.

Very very true, but I gotta admit i get confused sometimes. I always thought Billy Gould used a pic, but when I saw live clips he was finger all the way. At least, that is, I thought his attack/presence-filled tone suggested a pic user. Maybe thats just me.
Also, to a VERY new bassist, some finger bassists may be mistaken for pic users, Steve Harris for instance sometimes sounds picy.
I guess its all a matter of, like you said, how sensitive your ears are to pic and finger playing.

Well, that varies, just because he plays live w/fingers doesn't mean he doesn't pic it up in the studio. For example, watch the "Epic" video, he's very clearly playing with a pic on that jam. He's a perfect example of a bassist who doesn't limit himself to one technique.
