Okay so Im repainting an old p bass I picked up off craigslist. It had a terrible burst finish and Im repainting it fiesta red. I think it will look awesome with the maple neck. Anyways, I have pitting in the finish and was wondering if theres way to fix this without having to sand back down and start over?

finish problems

I tried sanding down to see if I could get it all out without hitting primer but I guess the paint isn't fully cured yet. Its been sitting for a day I guess maybe another day should be good? Sorry im a total noob when it comes to finishing.. hopefully I'll learn so next time I'll know what and what not to do.
I am assuming you stripped the body to bare wood and put on a proper sealer/primer. Or, did you paint over the existing finish? If the latter, you may have silicone contamination from not preping the surface properly. If you did not remove all old wax from the finish, it will "dimple" everywhere there was contamination. Is this what you are seeing? What products are you using?
I didn't sand to bare wood. There like small pits like someone poked the finish with a needle or something, like a really bad orange peel. Im using rustoleum primer and color over the existing nitro finish.
If you did not remove all of the old wax before sanding, your sandpaper could hjve imbeded the silicone deeper into the finish. I would suggest removing the fresh coating of Rustoleum, clean the old finish really well with mineral spirits. Wipe down with a clean cotton cloth and repeat the cleaning one more time. Sand with 600 grit paper and then spray it with Acryllic lacquer primer and top coat. Rustoleum does make a lacquer paint but I have not used it. I use Duplicolor Paint and have had nice results. Apply several light coats and let dry 24 hours before sanding and recoating. By the way, how do you know the bass is finished in Nitro?
