Finish Question

I've got a question and I hope the experts here can help. I have an Alder bass body that I'm stripping. Ultimately, I want to use an oil finish on it but I want the color somewhere close to a Butterscotch. How should I go about this? Should I stain it and then apply the oil or would a tung oil give me about this color. Any direction/ideas would be helpful.

Thanks In Advance.

you are going to need to add color if you want a true butterscotch(aka wash finishes of early fenders....but with oil) I don't do anything like what you are looking to achieve, I would look to an oil based stain, try mixing the stain and the finish oil using a piece of scrap to achieve the exact color you are looking for. best of luck.

Im looking for a similar finish on alder also. I bought a small can of minwax colonial maple colored stain today and hopefully it will turn out a butterscotch or something close. Waiting for the brown truck with the lumber is hard. Lol

That wait is nowhere near as tough as walking out of your wood brokers exotic cellar knowing there are 2 - 55"x5"x1" pieces of quartersawn kingwood that you didn't have the extra $130 for, that's tough, LMAO. So went my day:(

Thanks Musiclogic. So you suggest mixing the stain (oil based) directly in the tung oil. Then to apply multiple coats till the desired finish is acheived. Seems straightforward enough, didn't realize it was that unusual to go this route.
