Firebox practicing and recording question

So, I just picked up a firebox yesterday. Cubase is a complicated program, I have no recording experience.

First, when I record my bass, it seems to be in the right channel only. How do I get it to be panned center?

Second, I want to use this device for practice as well (with my wife). I want to be able to play stuff in other programs like a Hydrogen or The Incredible Slow Downer and give us the ability to play along? Do I have to save sound out of those programs and import them into Cubase? Or would you just run a line-out from the PC into the firebox and use up another firebox input? I'm not sure that I have any left over after connecting a microphone, keyboard (two channels, not digital out) and bass.

So how would you handle this setup?

I'm guessing you're using Cubase LE that came with the Firebox, i would sugest you read the manual that is on the instalation disc as a PDF file, it makes your life much easier.

To help with your firs question, you can choose wether your tracs in Cubase are Mono or Stereo. It 's harder to explain then if you looked it up in the manual (there is a little button on each track that switches from mono to stereo). Once you make your track a mono track you choose the imput your bass is plugged in and that's it.

With the other question, I have never used these programs you mention so can't be of much help. I would save the wave files from them and then open them in Cubase or just use the firebox as a mixer without Cubase being even fired up ( I'm not 100% sure if you can do this with the Firebox but this is how i use my Tascam where i monitor both the imputs and the output from the computer at the same time)

When I make the track mono, hitting that circle icon thingie, nothing is recorded. I get mono/stereo mismatch, but I can't find anything in the Firebox mixer that I need to change.

Yeah, i think I can so an output from the PC into the firebox and use it just as a mixer. Problem is I don't have enough inputs :(. Hrm.. wonder if I can do digital out from my PC. Time to look at the sound card!

Ones you make a track mono you have to make sure that you've got the right imput selected for that track, that is why you are not recording anything. If the bass is plugged into imput 1 make sure that the track you're recording on to has imput 1 selected on it.

Also, i just checked out Presonus site, you dont need to use anything other then the Firebox to use it for practice, you should get the stereo signal from any software down the firewire cable back to the firebox and be able to listen to that and the imputs at the same time. Use your software mixer (Presonus calls this "DSP mixer") to adjust the levels of your playback and any instruments you have plugged into the firebox. Hope i didn't confuse you even more.
