Firewire Q

I asked this in another thread, but it wasnt answered.

Up until recently I didnt realise there was a difference between firewire chipsets etc.

Ive been using my firepod with the onboard firewire on my MSI motherboard. I doubt this is anything to call home about. I have had quite a number of problems when trying to use the firepod, it can work fine, or the CPU usage can spike through the roof and give tons of latency problems.

Would using a seperate firewire card, there is a Belkin 3 port one which uses the TI chipset, work better?

Hey Will-

If I were in your shoes I'd definitely try out an add-on firewire card. Just be sure to confirm the return policy with the store.

You might also visit MSI's website and look for a new firmware for your chipset.

What processor specs are you running? Depending on the software you're using (lots of real time plugins, etc.) combined with processor speed, could result in the latency problems you are having.

I initially had problems with my Firebox before I went to TI chipset, but I now have it running on a RICOH chipset, no problem.

Intel Pentium 4 HT "Prescott" Core, 3.2Ghz

Its not a new CPU, but still pretty well spec'd i think.

Yeah, that CPU should be just fine.

Are you running a lot of plugins when it slows down?

You're probably on the right path with the firewire card though. Go with a PCI firewire card with a Texas Instruments chipset.

It sometimes works fine with plugins, sometimes it doesnt.
It works fine sometimes by itself, sometimes it doesnt.

It never seems to want fine with the Ampeg SVX tho!
