It may surprise you to learn that you're not the first person to ask this question. I strongly recommend searching this forum on "first bass" "beginner" "inexpensive" etc. and reading past posts. I think you'll find what you need there, if not, maybe a less general question to this group will get you some good advice that isn't duplicative to dozens of conversations that are already on record.
