first amp, suggestions?

my friends and i have just gotten together and we've already thrown some songs together. of course getting a stack going is on my mind and i need some input on good amps, preferably in the $400-600 range, and then cabs to go with them. i've been looking at avatar cabs and they seem pretty awesome, and i'd be willing to break my amp price range, at current, only for a marshall dbs(if anyone knows where i can find one!). thanks for your input!

For the head, I would go with the Ashdown Mag 300- you can pick them up for approximately $330- or the Mag 600 head- you can get them for around $500.

As far as cabs, go with Avatar.

That would give a really sweet rig that you'll be happy with for a long time- and it will look cool too.

Cheers,
TC

I don't think you can find a better (new) head for $600 than the Markbass LittleMark II. 500 clean, loud, punchy watts weighing in at less than 7 lbs. It won't do an overdriven/tube grit sound but you can get pedals to do this for you. I like my Avatar cabinet and I hear very good things about Dr. Bass cabinets which are in the same price range.

This is all IMHO, of course.

I currently use the Line 6 Lowdown Pro. It's only 300 watts (which has easily kept up with our guitar players marshal half stack), but it has some nice built in effects that help bring out some great tone. Plus, being a combo it is very easy to tote around.

I'm not saying it's better than what the others are suggesting, but it's a good amp for the price.

I think you can pick them up online for around $500.

a good 1x15 or 2x10 combo should work.

ask yourself, do you plan to gig with or without the use of a PA or against noisy guitars or drums. some smaller rigs cannot cut it.

the best small combo i used was a swr workingman's 15. it could compete with drums, and wasn't too much a bear to move. i don't know how the new workingpro 15s do?

is wanting cab, amp seperate.
avatar is a good deal cab wise.
go 2x12 and get toltex.
a GK backline 600 isn't a bad head for cheep.

no matter what anyone says, IMO never choose the GK backline 600.

after 2 days of having it it had so many problems, they replaced it for free. now about 6 months later, same problems again, now Im not sure whether to just get a better quality head.

the avatar 2x12 would work great for you & u can add a 2X10 to it later if you want when funds allow. Once you get your cab you can start checking out heads through your own cab. don't be too fixed on the marshall - lot's of heads out there would work for you & if you stay open minded, a good deal will come your way. it may be better to 'build' your system rather then settle for something that you will want to sell in a year. You can check out the new Carvin BX 600 & 1200 on their web site. They have great bang for the buck
