A languid (not to say “boring”) song about a drug-induced haze doesn’t strike me as the best choice for a HS talent show.
I’d pick something a bit more uptempo and cheerful.
OK, I wasn't going to, but these guys made me, sir...Yup there's going to be some dancing fools that night.
At first, I'd picked Empire of the Sun's "We are the People". The kids knew it, relevant lyrics for a leaver's assembly - I was even going to change the opening line to "We can remember, arriving in September" and then the drummer said "boring song, isn't it?" and she was right.
I like Comfortably Numb: with my eyes closed and headphones on - which is how many of your kids might react on the night. A lot of thought went into Born to be Wild: a guitar solo and interesting enough bass line for the experienced two, straight drumming and ironable fills and just BLOOG and wee-doo-wee-oodoo for the other two. More importantly, the kids knew it from a TV ad for free range eggs (I kid you not) and they got up and danced because "sir, sir, sir, miss and miss" (wish I'd called the band that) were being ace sports and not terribly hashing a groovy toon.
Not had your first practice yet, might be an idea to have a quick conflab at break time in the staff room for an alternate song.
That band is the funniest thing I've ever seen, they have two other songs on youtube too, haha! Check out their version of Cocaine.
Going by your avatar, I take it you are into the technical side of theatre? My teacher and mentor was Toshiro Ogawa, back in the early '80s. Also, Richard C. Huggins played a major role in my education during that time.
Have fun at the talent show, just don't upstage the students!

I practiced a lot and felt like I did great. We preach the idea of practicing at home to be prepared for rehearsal and I feel like the kids would be proud. ☺
I played the Gretsch and it was a bit of a curiosity. It sounded good.
I agree about the song choice. My suggestion was Beverly Hills. For some reason, the kids love Weezer. Go figure... So the song is a little slow but the lighting is going to rock!

I'm a high school teacher and a group of us were asked to play at the beginning of the school talent show (we're not competing; somebody thought it would be fun.) We're playing Comfortably Numb.
This is my first "band" experience, so I'm wondering which bass to take with me. Here are my options:
1. Gretsch 2202 - My first choice. I love this bass and feel very comfortable with it.
2. Squier SS Jag - The closest thing I have to a P bass.
3. Ibanez Talman SS - I think this might have too much growl for the song we're playing.
4. 1967 Mustang Bass (all original) - definitely has the cool factor, but needs some work and buzzes in places.
Help me out here TB!
Question: have you tested them at a gig-volume rehearsal yet? If not, I would definitely audition them in that context. A bass you love at home might not work as well in a loud live mix, or vice versa.
But all things being equal, bring the one you love, and bring a rock solid backup. Have fun!

Well that's what Roger played...a Precision...and the guy said his Jag is the closest to it. Not that it's necessary, but still...Spoken like a true Fender (Squier by) man.
