Double Bass First Bass to be purchased after Deployment. Recommendations?

As of right now, I am currently forward deployed and have been wanting to buy an upright for a long time but never really had the funds. Now that I am debt free and just collecting a paycheck out here, I am looking at buying one unfinished so I may paint it and put a wee bit of heart and soul in to the instrument itself. Any ideas on where I may find a decent unfinished upright bass?

Corporal Glenn,
First and foremost I want to thank you for your service! In my house US Service members are always welcome!
Now to your question. I am not sure what kind of music you are into, but since you mentioned painting your bass up I am assuming rock-a-billy. If that is the case, you might want to do some shopping for an old Alcoa or other brand aluminum bodied bass. They sound good for slapping and they take paint like a car! You can really dress them up to your hearts desire.
Thanks again for your service,
Shawn

Corporal Glenn, you might send an inquiry over to bobs house of basses in Maryland, he does some finishing of basses in the white to sell them,or used to anyway, good quality, he might sell something in the white. As far as shipping,if needed, not sure...

Cpl. Glenn . . . just a suggestion . . . with my thanks for your service as well . . . once you safely return & find a bass that you like/want to buy, just ask your dealer to contact the manufacturer with a special order request to ship it "in the white" (unfinished) <as others have done> which should save you some $$$ to boot. ;)

Glenn:
What about looking into getting Uncle Sam to buy you a new bass and possibly getting a musician spot there??? Even though it had absolutely nothing to do with my training or skills, I toured for a while as a musician when I was in the service; great time with lots of travel and fun people. I've got a customer who is in one of their bands and has a huge annual equipment budget.
