My personal philosophy for this would be to get the simple instrument. This is bottom tear gear for less of a tenth of what the original version costs. A P, PJ or J bass is a simple affair - and the simpler you go, the harder it is to mess it up. As far as I have heard, people are quite impressed that you get a usable instrument when you order one of these. I still advise everyone buying one to spend a few more bucks to visit a professional to get a proper setup done, and maybe it would be wise to get some other strings on straight from the start. You'll pay for a set of strings on top, but when a pro sets up your bass with those, you will have the option of changing strings in the future without needing to set up again (when you buy the exact same strings again).
