This is just based on personal experience so feel free to ignore me at your leisure but I'd skip the whole Ashdown thing. Poor sound, cones that blow too easily and indifferent customer service. I think the second hand tip is a good one - older Trace Elliot would sort you right out and I'd be looking at Peavey for the money that you have - sounds good and indestructible. I don't reckon you have enough to get amongst the quality Ampeg (I'm not convinced by their thin sounding b-series stuff) or Mark Bass gear, even second hand. Other than that ebayebayebayebayebay cos 500 nicker will get you far!
One last thought - why not wait until you can get a few hundred more quid cos then you can skip the "get what you can afford now then sell it in a few months because you want something bigger and better" situation that I'll bet most of us have been in and go for something BIG..!?
